When he says he's 'not ready for anything serious'

4 min read

'I'm just not ready for anything serious right now.' He said it early, or somewhere along the way, and yet he still texts you sweet, still sees you, still acts like something. So which is it? Here's how to read the 'not ready' line honestly.

Believe the words, not just the behavior

When someone tells you where they stand, that's the most reliable information you'll ever get. It's tempting to weigh his affectionate actions against his words and decide the actions must be the 'real' truth. But 'not ready' is him telling you the ceiling. Betting on the sweet moments over the plain sentence is how people stay stuck for a year.

'Not ready' vs 'not ready with you'

Sometimes it's genuinely about his timing: a rough season, healing, real life. Sometimes it's a gentle way to keep the good parts without the commitment. The difference shows over time. Someone truly not ready gives you space and doesn't keep you on a string. Someone using it as a hedge keeps enjoying all the benefits while the title never comes.

The question that cuts through it

Ask yourself honestly: if he never becomes 'ready', can you live with exactly what this is right now, indefinitely? If the answer is no, then staying and hoping is a bet against something he already told you plainly. You're allowed to want more, and you're allowed to walk when someone can't meet you there.

Your move

Take him at his word and watch whether his actions close the gap or just keep you comfortable inside it. Write down what he offers versus what you're waiting for, because on paper 'not ready' stops being a puzzle you can solve with enough patience. You don't have to convince someone to be ready for you.
